When it comes to learning any language, most of us want to learn it as quickly as possible. The reasons vary but it could be because you’re planning a trip to Portugal or Brazil, or perhaps you have a friend who speaks little English and you’d like to learn to speak Portuguese to converse more easily. Whatever the reasons, we all feel the need to learn things as quickly as possible.
So, the question is, is it possible to learn to speak Portuguese quickly? The answer is “yes” and “no” meaning, it dependns on what level of Portuguese you’d like to learn. In other words, do you just want to learn a few words or commons phrases such as “where is the hotel” or “I would like to order….” or do you want to be a conversational level? If it’s the former, then it shouldn’t be too difficult to learn common sayings. However, if you’d like to be able to converse, then I’m afraid that’ll take a bit more time. But, this goes for any langnuage and not just Portuguese.
Another consideration when it comes to learning Portuguese is do you want to learn Portuguese from Portugal or from Brazil? There are major differences between the two, or at least how they’re spoken, accents, local dialects, slang etc. So, it’s best to first decide on which “type” of Portuguese you’d like to learn and expand from there.
Each person has their own pace at learning a language so perhaps it’s best for you to learn in a classroom environment or perhaps you’d prefer to learn at home from a CD. If you have any Portuguese or Brazilian friends that are fluent in Portuguese, that’s even better and they can help. Whatever method of learning you choose, it’s great to learn to speak another language!
